Technologys Effect on the Future Essay -- essays research papers
I don't know what the future holds but I know who holds the future. Days go by and how time flies, seasons always changing. When we contemplate the future we envision mind-warping technology and global warming destroying the Earth. Change is inevitable but it's up to our supremacy what we and our planet Earth change into. Will we help or hinder our future survival? One sentence from America's Declaration of Independence has some relevance to this matter. 'But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security'. In other words if something is wrong, those that have the ability to take action, have the responsibility to take action. Technology! Yes, it has its positives, but like all other things is also has its negatives. Would we really need hover cars? They would still congest ?air space?. What would be the benefits of splitting the atom more that once (What was the point of splitting it anyway)? Or will ?Little Boy? the World War Two atomic bomb containing Uranium be resurrected from the Japanese city of Hiroshima and be upgraded to wipe out the brain stems of individuals whose unique brain patterns have been programmed into the device? For years technology has been cultivated. Powerful and ingenious it maybe, but in our hands this technology has been used for demoralizing war! If we carry on using these technological advancements for the use of hostilities on Earth (or maybe in space) then both parties will use their own weapons and both will be crushed, ground into tiny pieces and blasted into oblivion. As the saying goes... ... and video. Molecular teleportation is a long way away. One of the most talked about subjects on the future is climate. At this very moment the Earth is warming up and we are the cause. The warming of the Earth is known more commonly as global warming. Maybe this subject is going to be fought over for centuries while we squander the time we have left away, but even if we did stop doing the things that cause global warming it will not bring it to a standstill. The main cause is pollution, and although scientists say that crude oil will be a thing of the past, alternatives to it will be created. Whether you consider the future to be one hundred years away or just a second the conception of the future is always the same. There are numerous views on the future but each one says the identical thing. I don?t know what the future holds but I know who holds the future.

Karl Marx And The Communist Manifesto Essay -- Communist Manifesto Essa
Karl Marx And The Communist Manifesto Because the first printing of the Communist Manifesto was limited and the circulation restricted, the Manifesto did not have much impact on society after it was written in 1848. This meant that there were not many people who had access to the document. It wasnââ¬â¢t until 1871, when the Paris Commune occurred, that the Communist Manifesto began to have a huge impact on the working class all over the world.[i] The Paris Commune, which was the insurrection of Paris against the French government, resurrected the idea of communism that had been banished for good just a few years after the Manifestoââ¬â¢s publishing. It created widespread interest of the Manifesto among the dominant classes as well as in the labor movement. In their 1872 introduction to the Communist Manifesto, Marx and Engels acknowledged the important influence of the Paris Commune on their thinking: ââ¬Å"One thing especially was proved by the Commune, viz., that ââ¬Ëthe working class cannot simply lay hold of ready-made state machinery, and wield it for its own purposes.ââ¬â¢"[ii] The Manifesto would soon become the most widely read publication of the modern working class (Proletariat) movement. By the late 19th century, through the influence of the Internationals (communist organizations), Marxââ¬â¢s ideas had become popular with the European trade movement, and the major socialist parties were committed to his ideas in theory if not in practice. A major separation occurred, however, between those socialists who believed that violent revolution was inevitable, and those, most notably Eduard Bernstein, who argued that socialism could be achieved by evolution. Both groups could cite Marx as their a... ... on humans all over the world. All About Kesha
Singer, songwriter. Born Kesha Rose Sebert on March 1, 1987, in Los Angeles, California. She was exposed to music at an early age through her mother Pebe, a songwriter. Her mother's biggest songwriting success was ââ¬Å"Old Fames Can't Hold a Candle to You,â⬠which was a hit for Joe Sun and Dolly Parton. The first few years of Kesha's life were a struggle for her family. Her mother had difficulty earning enough to support Kesha and her older brother. ââ¬Å"We were on welfare and food stamps,â⬠the artist explained on her website. ââ¬Å"One of my first memories is my mom telling me, ââ¬ËIf you want something, just take it. â⬠When she was 4, Kesha moved to Nashville with her family, where her mother had landed a songwriting contract. Sometimes tagging along with her mother, Kesha spent a lot of time in recording studios during her early teens. Her mother encouraged her interest in singing, allowing Kesha to work on some of her song demos. Kesha also went to a music school, where she learned about songwriting. Deep in the heart of the country music scene, she was inspired by the likes of Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline. At 17, Kesha left high school to pursue a music career. She changed her name to Ke$ha and moved to Los Angeles to work with producer Dr. Luke, who had worked on hit singles for Katy Perry and Kelly Clarkson among others. ââ¬Å"I thought her voice was distinctive, and I fell in love with her personality,â⬠Dr. Luke explained to Entertainment Weekly. ââ¬Å"She had the same sass and irreverence she has now. â⬠Ke$ha was determined to break into the business. According to one story, she paid off a gardener to get inside music legend Prince's house to leave one of her demos for him. She landed a few gigs as a back-up vocalist as well, performing on songs by Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. But her big break came from an uncredited and unpaid cameo on rapper Flo Rida's 2009 No. hit ââ¬Å"Right Round. â⬠She told Allure magazine that she wasn't upset about not receiving any payment for the song. ââ¬Å"You have to pay your dues,â⬠she explained. Soon after her work with Flo Rida, Ke$ha landed a record contact with RCA. She released her first single, ââ¬Å"Tik Tok,â⬠later that year. The party anthem developed quite a following, soon becoming one of the most downloaded songs in America, and then reaching the top of the Billboard pop charts in January 2010. Because she has attracted many young fans, Ke$ha has been criticized for some of her lyrics, especially those ocused on drinking and alcohol. ââ¬Å"I'm not a babysitter,â⬠the singer said. ââ¬Å"It's their parents' responsibility to take care of them. â⬠For Ke$ha, her life provides much of the inspiration for her songs. ââ¬Å"I'll go out with my friends and get rowdy . . . I'm not sorry, and I will write about it. â⬠Her debut album, Animal, reached the top of the charts after its release in January 2010. In addition to ââ¬Å"Tik Tok,â⬠Ke$ha has scored two more Top 10 hits: ââ¬Å"Blah B lah Blahâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Your Love Is My Drug. â⬠Her first headlining tour will begin this spring. What me and MOST people think of Ke$ha Ke$ha is very different yeah its true but its good. If she wasnââ¬â¢t so different she probably would not be where she is now. She insires a lot of people to be themselves and free. Some may think this is bad but its not it just how you take it small, moderate, or, extreme. She is very original and unique she captures up beat and catchy songs that anyone would like. She is also not one to make up things and act like someone she is not. There is no point in pretending to be someone eles. Because being you is something very important in making you, wellâ⬠¦ you.

The Tally Stick
ââ¬Å"The Tally Stickâ⬠ENLT 121-2 It is not always feasible to express ones love for another human being simply through words or ordinary actions. Jarold Ramsey wrote a poem that demonstrates how simple markings and items can have priceless meanings to them. ââ¬Å"The Tally Stickâ⬠is a poem that explains the symbolic intricacies of a stick that he has created for his wife of many years and more to come. The poem begins showing the analogy between their marriage and the general physiology of the stick itself.Ramsey carved their ââ¬Å"lives in secretâ⬠(2) to show that his work of art and their memories should remain mysterious. Both the stick and their marriage are beautiful to the public eye, but he only wants the two of them to know the details of why it is so precious. The stick is carved in ââ¬Å"mountain mahoganyâ⬠(3) which is both very durable and free of voids present in common woods. This quality of both wood and love is exemplified by ââ¬Å"hard an d rareâ⬠(3) to symbolize the strength and preciousness of both.Line 5 makes the transition from Ramsey discussing the quality of their love to positively reminiscing their lives together by ââ¬Å"touching and handlingâ⬠(5) the stick as opposed to observing it. This is what makes the tally stick so meaningful; a couple would ordinarily revisit their marriage by opening a scrapbook, whereas Ramsey has created an artifact that can be felt in addition to observed to stir up more powerful emotions. The most beloved part of the marriage to Ramsey is the actual ceremony itself. The ââ¬Å"intricate notchâ⬠(6) at the beginning of the stick, which he explains is ââ¬Å"our weddingâ⬠(7), demonstrates how much he values the matrimonial ceremony between them. This intricacy is created where grains ââ¬Å"converge and joinâ⬠(6) which can be personified to a man and woman becoming oneââ¬âtheir convergence making them larger and more whole than they were as indivi duals. He values this moment so dearly that he can give specific details of the wedding such as ââ¬Å"who dancedâ⬠(9). Because he can recall so many details of this day, the details of the stick are readable even ââ¬Å"with a thumbâ⬠(9).This deep grain was chosen to represent this occasion to symbolize its significance, but more importantly because those grains are permanent in the wood just as their love is permanent. There are two specific symbols that Ramsey etched into the stick symbolizing two unavoidable events: life and death. The first symbols carved were ââ¬Å"little arrowheadsâ⬠(10), and Ramsey explicitly says they symbolize the ââ¬Å"births of our childrenâ⬠(11). Arrowheads were essential for the sustainment of life in ancient times, therefore Ramsey chose them to represent his children that bring life to him and his wife.Along with the arrowheads are ââ¬Å"heavy crossesâ⬠(12) which also explicitly represents the loss of their parents an d friends. In the bible, Jesus was forced to suffer by carrying his own heavy cross before crucifixion; the crosses on the stick symbolize both the suffering of Ramsey and his wife and the deaths of their loved ones. Not only does Ramsey include the influential moments of their lives through etchings, but uncontrollable events are also present on the stick. He included ââ¬Å"Events, Historyâ⬠(15) because occurrences outside marriage do have a slight impact on how a couple lives together. These events affected them much less than those such as the birth of their children, and he symbolizes this by marking them as ââ¬Å"random hashmarksâ⬠(15). These small scratches were placed sporadically against the ââ¬Å"swirling grainâ⬠(16); the swirling grain is more precious and has a direction and purpose on the stick, whereas the hashmarks were chiseled randomly simply to present a reminder to him and his wife. Ramsey goes into detail about two historical events represented by the hashmarks. The ââ¬Å"Year the World Went Wrongâ⬠(17) refers to around 1961 ââ¬â the year the United States sent troops into Vietnam which eventually escaladed into the Vietnam War including China, Russia, and France. Other hashmarks on the stick are the ââ¬Å"Great Men fellâ⬠(18). This is mentioned after the ââ¬ËYear the World Went Wrongââ¬â¢ which means that these days occurred after 1961, yet were relatively close to that time period. It is possible that men who ââ¬Ëfellââ¬â¢ (died) included Kennedy in 1963, Malcom X in 1965, Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968, and Robert F. Kennedy in 1968.All four of those men profoundly impacted America and it is likely Ramsey and his wife grieved over their deaths together. In spite of these horrible events occurring, the love between Ramsey and his wife ââ¬Å"run through it allâ⬠(19) both in reality and in the grains on the stick. We know that their marriage persevered because their ââ¬Å"lengthening r unesâ⬠(19) ran through the hash marks (19), meaning their growing characteristics and companionship as a couple were not affected by these tragedies but instead continued on their natural course. The final stanza returns to the present time and describes the unfinished state of the tally stick. Ramsey believes that he and his wife are approaching death by indicating the stick is whittled ââ¬Å"nearly end to endâ⬠(20). While the stick is almost completely whittled, there is in fact still space left, showing his desire to create more memories with his wife so they can be carved on. Although the stick was carved out of ââ¬Å"hardâ⬠(4) mahogany, the current state is ââ¬Å"delicate as scrimshawâ⬠(21) because of the amount of wood carved away by memories. It is so delicate that it would not ââ¬Å"bear you upâ⬠(21), simply emphasizing the stickââ¬â¢s physical weaknessââ¬ânot even able to support the weight of his wife if she used it as a cane. The fin al stanza is the first time that Ramsey admits his marriage is realistic and not perfect. Outside of the beautiful carvings is wood that has been smoothened simply by handling it. The phrases ââ¬Å"Regrets have polished itâ⬠(22) and ââ¬Å"hand over handâ⬠(22) are both used to symbolize times of dispute in the marriage. The effort and friction required to hold the stick by hand while carving it has ââ¬Ëpolishedââ¬â¢ it, which is analogous to the effort needed to work through hardships and ââ¬Ëregretsââ¬â¢ of the marriage. In addition to the Tally Stickââ¬â¢s current state, the final stanza expresses Ramseyââ¬â¢s desires for the remainder of his marriage and life. Ramsey only wants to reminisce meaningful life events with his wife, which are represented by their ââ¬Å"unforgotten wondersâ⬠(23). The fingers will feel ââ¬Å"sign after signâ⬠(25) on the stick, which have already been established as memorable events earlier in the poem.Ramsey w ants this remembrance to be innocent and enjoyable as ââ¬Å"children on a trailâ⬠(24), like kids playing on a trail in the forest. He does not wish to talk about the hardships in his marriage, as seen through the phrase ââ¬Å"talk softlyâ⬠(26), clearly indicating a peaceful conversation that would not include any regrets. The final phrase of the poem is the ââ¬Å"eyes go blindâ⬠(27). The most provoking thought of this last line does not refer to simply losing vision, but rather is an analogy to dying together so that neither of them has to experience life without the other.Ramsey ends the poem with this desire to express how dearly he loves his wife. ââ¬Å"The Tally Stickâ⬠demonstrates how Ramseyââ¬â¢s love for his wife can be objectified through an artwork that he has created. The medium for the masterpiece and the symbols on it are carefully selected so that every part of the stick is significant. The marriage, the milestones, and the hardships of th eir lives together are engraved on the stick, yet Ramsey makes it clear which parts are of most importance to him through detail and emphasizes that he truly believes in the phrase ââ¬Å"until death do us partâ⬠.

Econ - Essay Example As such both the anti-trust laws and intellectual property right laws are at odds with each other due to their potential differences. Though both the legal regimes may seem quite non-relative with each other as intellectual property rights deal with the protection of certain rights over any kind of technological or other advances made whereas the anti-trust laws specifically deal with the competition and how market should be regulated. It is however, argued that both are linked in the sense that government attempt to create so called justified value in the market in a bid to unite the market. This paper will discuss the paradox of what intellectual property rights and anti-trust laws prevent and permit respectively and how this paradox can be solved. Intellectual Property Rights and Anti-trust laws Intellectual property rights are given in order to provide exclusive rights for different intangible assets to the owners of these assets. Most commonly Intellectual Property Rights or IPR are granted by giving or registering patents, trademarks, copyrights as well as industrial design rights. It is however; critical to understand IPRs are becoming increasingly more important not just only in the trade related issues at the national and international level but they are also becoming a matter of daily routine. This aspect of the IPRs therefore makes them critically more important to gain increasingly more significance from the social perspective also. It is argued that there is no uniform definition or explanation of the intellectual property rights at the global level however, different agreements and treaties have actually being made in order to iron out the anomalies and bring in harmony at the national level in the intellectual property rights. World Intellectual Property Organization defines intellectual property rights as ââ¬Å"creations of the mind: inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images and designs used in commerceâ⬠. (WIPO). This definition is relatively different from what has been defined by World Trade Organization. Definition by WTO suggests that intellectual property rights give exclusive rights to the creators of mindââ¬â¢s inventions to use them for certain period of time. The above definitions therefore suggest that intellectual property rights and their legal implications are still to be defined in uniform manner. Anti-trust laws however, are related with the concept of competition which is purely and economic concept and refer to a market based mechanism. Under this mechanism, everyone is allowed to enter and trade in the market freely and without any restrictions and should be given equal treatment and fair chance to pursue oneââ¬â¢s own economic interests. Competition however, also requires optimal allocation of resources and is considered only valuable when it is able to optimally allocate the resources in the market. What is also important to note that competition inherently require s that there should not be any barriers or unfair use of market power and use of unfair practices which can provide an unfair advantage to someone? Competition therefore advocates a fairly balanced and just market mechanism under which everyone is free to enter and exit the market

Text in Context Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Text in Context - Essay Example I came up with the discussion concerning generation gaps because it is a vice responsible for massive alienation among families in the western countries following the growing multiculturalism. Generation differences have been an issue for years, but it has reached intolerable levels in this postmodern period. Most areas affected by this change are music tastes, politics, culture, and fashion. The discussion regarding generation differences is common in both the film and the article as we can see some difference between parents and their children after a long period of separation. The film Tiny Furniture is a film examining the issue concerning generation gaps in families. This results from differing communication lines; ââ¬Å"Aura thinks things may be turning around for herâ⬠(Manohla 2). The film revolves around a case where a girl leaves home and comes back after four years of schooling. The family welcomes her, which is a tradition in every community after a long period of s eparation. During this period, it is obvious that the girl assumed the culture among other ways of doing things in her previous destination. It becomes difficult to hides ones identity in this situation having in mind that she has already reached maturity age. One of the challenging issues after her arrival is concerning the time to wake up. It is common sense that after dawn, one should rise and start attending to his or her duties or even plan one or the other. However, it is not also detrimental to fail to wake up early as far as you are not ignoring your duties. This is not understandable by most parents, as they want to build their children in a spirit of hard work. The abstract between the parties is communication, as this will create a basis where they will understand each other. Most campus students find going out being part and parcel of their life. This is quite different in relation with the interpretation from parents. They view out going as an immoral activity, which sh ould be discouraged under all cost; ââ¬Å"she goes to a party and reconnects with Charlotteâ⬠(Manohla 1). They fail to understand or interpret it from a young generation view, where they view it as a way of socializing and relaxing after a long week of schoolwork among other commitments. In reference with the film, this idea kills her morale as it vied as a vice; it immensely disappoints her and alienates her spirit. In these instances, people find themselves confused as far as doing justice to different parties is concerned. However, this maybe a difficult task as it will be hiding oneââ¬â¢s identity. The best solution to breaking communication differences, as this will enhance a healthy relationship despite cultural differences between parties; if Aura in the film had open communication lines with the mother, there would be no conflicts as far as different practices are concerned. The article, Generations is about the two generations that exist in America because of immi gration. The first generation consists of the immigrants who entered America from ââ¬Å"Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin Americansâ⬠while the second generation consists of their children who were born in America (George & Trimbur 42). The two generations share biological relationships together with other older generations. However, there is a gap in the way of life or the culture of the two generations. The difference comes in terms of the commitment of the two generations towards the traditions and customs set by their ancestors. It is common for individuals
